TAG Heuer Monaco Steve McQueen Review

There are many TAG Heuer Monaco watches, but the Steve McQueen Edition is one of those watches that collectors can't stop talking about. As a matter of fact, the Heuer Monaco watch he wore in the movie "Le Mans" was auctioned for over XXX in 2009. The manufacturer's list price of a Monaco Chronograph is approximately

This newer version of TAG's Monaco watch is powered by the new and improved TAG Heuer Caliber 12, an automatic (self-winding) movement with 59 jewels and quick date correction. It oscillates at a frequency of 4Hz, that is, 28,800 vibrations per hour, and offers a power reserve of 40 hours.

Previous model, model# caw211p.fc6356 (shown below). It has a similar blue dial and comes on a soft calfskin strap. It works with the TAG Heuer Caliber 11 movement. This model looks more like the original version, thanks to its red-tipped hour and minute hands with horizontal hour markers.

Steve McQueen adopted the motto of TAG Heuer watches; He was a legendary person with a very interesting life story, highlighting the saying "Don't Collapse Under Pressure". From his colorful youth to his fast-paced film career and his passion for high speeds, his story is the embodiment of this motto.

The Beginning, Steve McQueen's Film Career, Racing, Flying and Stunts

This special series is a true classic, inspired by the vintage watch he wears; With its stainless steel case, transparent case back, blue dial, silver sub-dials and unquestionably sporty perforated strap. Steve McQueen has an interesting story, and TAG Heuer keeps his legacy alive with the blue-dial, square case TAG Heuer Monaco, which he wore during his role in the movie "Le Mans".

Early Years

Steve McQueen had a rough start in life. He had parents who were unable to care for him, so he was raised by his grandparents and uncle on a farm in the town of Slater, Missouri. McQueen says he first experienced his passion for speed after receiving a red tricycle from his uncle Claude. When she was eight years old, she returned to her mother and lived with her and her new husband. As a farewell gift, his uncle gave him a gold pocket watch with the inscription "To Steve, who was a son to me...". Perhaps this was the spark that gave Steve McQueen an affinity for luxury watches like the blue-dialed TAG Heuer Monaco he so famously wore in later life.

When she returns to her mother's house, she learns that her new stepfather is ill-tempered and physically abusive; Within a year, this man caused Steve to choose to live on the streets when he was only 9 years old. She soon returns to her uncle's farm, and within a few years, when she is twelve, her mother divorces, then remarries, and asks her to move back in to live with her and her new husband.

Unfortunately, his mother married another violent man, this time one who preferred to use his fists on both Steve and his mother; He even pushed Steve down the stairs once. Although Steve was known to be a bit of a mischief in his youth, he eventually got on track and at one point, after spending several years in a reformatory, joined the United States Marine Corps; here he heroically saved the lives of five Marines. After this incident, he was appointed to the honor guard, where he guarded President Harry Truman's yacht.

After being honorably discharged in 1950, he began studying acting in New York… later earning the nickname “The King of Cool.” He eventually started racing motorcycles at Long Island City Raceway, and his speedster instincts kicked in, turning him into a pretty extraordinary racer.

Hollywood Years

McQueen was 25 when he moved to Los Angeles, California, where he began taking roles in television productions and soon B movies. His first film role was in the movie "Somebody Up There Likes Me", which fits perfectly with its title; Hollywood star Paul Newman, who passed away recently, also starred in this movie. Although Steve McQueen made a few more films after this movie, his real breakthrough came at the age of 29, when Frank Sinatra fired Sammy Davis Jr. from the movie "Never So Few" after hearing him say negative things about him on a radio show.

Steve McQueen took the role instead, and Sinatra recognized that there was something special and authentic about this young man's take on the role in which he felt comfortable. Sinatra made sure McQueen got plenty of close-ups, and the speedster was truly in his element in scenes where he fires a Tommy gun or wields a switchblade while driving at high speeds.

Old Blue Eyed was right about this young blue-eyed bad boy, and soon John Sturges, who directed "Never So Few," told Steve "we'll give the camera to Steve McQueen" in his first hit, The Magnificent Seven. His career took off like a Formula One car with nitrous oxide in its tank. McQueen was used to high speeds and went with the flow. In '68, he was nominated for an Oscar for his role in "Bullit," perhaps one of his most famous films; In this movie, he cruised the streets of San Francisco in a Ford Mustang GT 390 chasing a black Dodge Charger.

Although his life had a rocky start, he achieved iconic status in Hollywood. The film was such an incredible hit that Warner Brothers were begging him to make more. He also starred in a series about a Formula 1 racer called "Le Mans"; In this series, he famously wore a blue dial TAG Heuer Monaco watch with the Heuer emblem on his suit. He was on the fast track to success and by 1974 he was the highest-paid actor in the world.

Steve McQueen's Racing Career, Flying and Stunts

Despite a very successful film career, Steve McQueen was a racer at heart. He didn't care what he used; car, motorcycle or plane; As long as he went fast, he was happy. When there was a driving scene in a movie, he would usually do most of the stunts himself. He was actually considering becoming a professional racing car driver and even tried it out in the '61 British Touring Car Championship, finishing 3rd. He competed in the 1970 Sebring 12 Hours even with his left foot in a cast. To his disappointment, his film career did not leave much time for professional racing but the talent was always there and the need for high-speed cars was always dominant.

He loved exotic sports cars and owned several such as the Porsche 356 Speedster, Porsche 908 and 917, as well as a Ferrari 512 and a 1963 Ferrari 250 Lusso Berlinetta. He also owned a Jaguar D-type XKSS, a Ford GT40 and a 1962 Cobra. He tried several times to get the Mustang GT 930 he drove in "Bullit", but was never able to due to the damage the vehicles sustained.

In addition to his love of race cars, he also loved flying and owned several planes, including a '46 Piper J-3 Cub, a '45 Stearman, a '31 Pitcairn biplane. He kept his planes in a hangar not far from where he lived in his later years. McQueen was also a big fan of off-road motorcycle racing and was inducted into the Off-road Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1978.
