Oris Big Crown 1917 Limited Edition Review
As of today, most watch manufacturers are following an increasingly common trend of designing larger watches for men and women. Another trend that has become more common lately is the vintage look. The hot news at Baselworld was that Oris took this to the next level and celebrated its first pilot's wristwatch with a new limited edition called Big Crown 1917. It got its name from the year in which they produced the first pilot wristwatches. This watch is a modern-day, vintage-inspired nod to the past while keeping things current.
The reference number of the watch is 01 732 7736 4081-Set LS and it is limited to 1917 pieces worldwide. This number, along with the number of the relevant piece, is engraved on the polished solid steel caseback. The OWC logo is engraved in the middle of the case back; Although this emblem is usually reserved only for gold models, Oris thought it would be appropriate to include it in this limited edition.
The side of the round, pebble-shaped case has a polished finish, as does the fixed bezel ring. On the right side, there is a large "onion" type winding crown. Just above the crown, there is a pusher with an engraved number sign (or hashtag sign for the new generation). This push-to-start mechanism that sets the time is also something they brought back, and Oris thought this element should be present in this watch as well to keep things as unique and true to the original as possible.
Domed sapphire glass covers and protects the fine-grained, textured silver dial. The Arabic numerals use a Super-Luminova® tint called “Light Old Radium,” which is the tint of old, long-lasting radium that was used many years ago for luminescence in watchmaking but is no longer used. There is a distinctive shadow underneath the numbers printed in black; This gives the figures a more three-dimensional appearance. A railway-style seconds track is printed in black along the flange of the dial, and there is a step down in the center of the dial where you will find the blued steel cathedral-style hour and minute hands, which are also filled with luminescent material.
Inside the 40 mm polished stainless steel case lies the heart that powers the Big Crown 1917: Oris Caliber 732. This is an ébauche movement based on the Sellita SW-200-1 caliber. This automatic movement operates at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour, contains 26 hour stones and has a power reserve of approximately 38 hours when fully wound. The watch is attached to a brown leather strap with thin, curved lugs that also feature matching polished workmanship. The case offers 50m/165ft water resistance, which isn't much. So it's best not to let it get wet for anything more than a light poolside swim. Click here for more information about what kind of waterproofing you can expect from your watch.
The watch comes on a light brown soft calfskin strap with dark brown sides and has a matching leather cuff on the back, just like the original. The reverse of the strap has a dark calfskin lining and is stitched with brown thread to match the front of the strap. The watch also comes with a second leather strap with a steel rivet on one end. In case you want to wear it without cuffs.
The size and shape of the case makes it look a little small on the wrist, but wearing it with the cuff increases wrist presence and makes the watch appear slightly larger on the wrist. The Oris Big Crown 1917 comes with a commemorative box set and a leather watch holder and case with space for a second strap.
