The watch is tested by placing it in a machine similar to a watch winder for everyday use and subjecting it to the same movement it would undergo in everyday use. The amplitude and balance of the clock are tested in 6 different positions. The power reserve is tested to ensure that the watch will run for the amount of time Jaeger-LeCoultre specifies. The watch is then exposed to different environmental influences, such as temperature fluctuations. They first start the watch at 22° C (71.6° F). Then they test at 4° C (39.2° F). They then test it at 40° C (104° F). The watch then goes through another inspection, this time called Cyclotest, which takes about two weeks; During this time, the clocks are rotated and left motionless at various angles for different periods of time. This helps test the accuracy of the watch under real-life conditions. The watch is then evaluated to ensure it can handle its advertised water resistance. The watch is exposed to crazy amounts of air pressure, and on some watches this can be anywhere from 3 to 20 atmospheres.

As for accuracy and deviation tolerances, JLC does not disclose this information. However, once their watches have passed all the tests, they are stamped on the case back with an oval emblem with theJL logo in the middle andthe words "1000 HOURS CONTROL" around it; as seen below.

So why all the fanfare?
