Oris Aquis Staghorn Restoration Limited Edition Review

When a watch brand like Oris takes the time to support the work of an organization that protects endangered species, it deserves a Limited Edition that supports the cause.
The date was March 4, 2014; ESA has placed staghorn coral (Acropora Cervicornis) on the endangered species list. This hard coral got its name because its branches resemble the antlers of a male deer. Although this coral species is the fastest growing of all coastal corals in the Atlantic, unfortunately it is observed that it is difficult to maintain its numbers. While most people don't think of corals as being higher up the food chain, they actually provide habitat for many species, help reefs grow, and contribute to keeping ecosystems sustainable. Their role may be seemingly behind the scenes, but it is an extremely important role.
Oris Aquis Staghorn Restoration Limited Edition Review
Oris, a mechanical watch manufacturer and a favorite brand of many professional divers and diving enthusiasts, knows all too well the destruction that occurs when you remove an important part from a watch mechanism. Understanding the importance of each piece playing its own special role is perhaps why they joined forces with the Coral Restoration Foundation to support the restoration of staghorn coral.
Introducing Oris' Staghorn Restoration Limited Edition. An innovative and truly eye-catching automatic diver's watch. Let's take a closer look at what makes this watch special.
CASE
The 43.5 mm case is made of stainless steel, has a brushed and polished workmanship and has a solid structure. The screw-in crown and seals used in its construction provide excellent water resistance of 300 m/1000 ft. Since the case is only 12.6 mm thick, it doesn't feel bulky on the wrist and can easily fit under most shirt sleeves when you need to get out of your wetsuit.
Back of the Case
The case back is made of solid stainless steel and is beautifully engraved and decorated with a relief figure of the Staghorn. 'Oris Staghorn Restoration Limited Edition' is written around the Staghorn engraving, with the edition number surrounding this just below. On the case back, you will also see 6 holes that are used to remove the watch back cover.
Personally, I would have preferred to see the movement through a transparent case back, but the reason why they did not design the watch with this feature is quite obvious; Because in this way, it is possible to have a very special edition case back, as it is now.
BEZEL
The black ceramic rotating bezel has an orange gradual scale from 12 o'clock to 3 o'clock. At the top of the bezel, there is a lume dot inside an orange triangle pointing downwards.
On the bezel, from 4 o'clock to 11 o'clock, white numbers indicate the minutes in every ten-minute interval; namely 20, 30, 40 and 50, and they are separated from each other by white hour markers.
dial
The dial of the Oris Staghorn edition is extraordinary, to say the least. One interesting detail about it that you won't see every day is how the day of the week is displayed on the chapter ring in the center: a rotating disc is used, and a momentary orange glow underneath a section reveals the day of the week.
The metallic blue dial is quite impressive and has a bluish tone reminiscent of the depths of the ocean. The polished steel hour and minute hands and hour markers are filled with Superluminova BG W9 lume filler to ensure excellent visibility. The seconds hand in the center is bright orange and has a lume dot towards its tip. All this beauty is protected by an anti-reflective and scratch-resistant sapphire glass.
mechanism
The Oris Aquis Staghorn Limited Edition is powered by an Oris automatic movement; Oris caliber 735, based on Sellita's SW220-1 ébauche caliber.
The signature red rotor provides constant energy to the self-winding mechanism. The 26-jewel Oris 735 movement beats at 28,800 VpH and has a power reserve of approximately 38 hours.
variations
There are currently two watches in this limited edition series. One is the model you see here, with reference number 01 735 7734 4185-Set MB and comes with a steel bracelet. The other model comes with a black rubber strap with a push-button folding buckle and the reference number 01 735 7734 4185-Set RS.
CONCLUSION
It's a truly dazzling watch with lots of unique features, and offers enough waterproofing for regular scuba diving and perhaps some coral reef exploration; but this waterproofing isn't designed for serious, heavy deep sea diving or anything like that. It looks great on the wrist, and with its stainless steel bracelet it's even pretty versatile, though the rubber strap version is probably best worn with a wetsuit or other sporty setting. Even though it only has a 38-hour power reserve.
We currently carry both models and offer them at discounted prices. We even have a second-hand model, complete with the original manufacturer's warranty and all original documents and documents, available at a much more affordable price.
