In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission, a limited edition Omega Speedmaster Professional has been introduced. Let's take a good close look at it!
Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch Apollo 11 Review
The first thing that caught my attention, even before I held the watch in my hand, was the meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail in the presentation of the watch. I'm talking about the box, which combines the tones of space-age material with warm and earthy details that offer a vintage charm. It creates a perfect curiosity for those hiding inside.
When the box is opened, it's as if a reenactment of Apollo 11 is taking place. The inside of the box depicts a very impressive lunar surface in high resolution.
A closer look at the contents of the box reveals a metallic gold-tone booklet bearing two mission crests and an embossed print of Neil Armstrong's iconic footprint. There are also two engraved plaques showing the landing coordinates and landing time.
There is a recessed section in the very center of the box; Here you will find the Omega Speedmaster Professional Apollo 11 edition chronograph mounted on a gorgeous lunar module display stand.
The watch itself is quite breathtaking with its gold details. The brushed and meticulously polished stainless steel case features a full (solid) case back with a NAIAD lock that ensures correct alignment of the case back as it is secured to the case.
The center of the case back is gray, surrounded by an engraving of Neil Armstrong's iconic footprint and decorated with gold inscription of his famous quote "That's one small step for a man – One giant leap for mankind". The words 'Apollo 11' and '50th Anniversary' are engraved on the top of the stainless steel case back, and the words 'Limited Edition' and the watch number, for example XXXX/6969, are engraved on the bottom and filled in black.
The front of the watch is even more impressive. The bezel is made of 18k Moonshine gold with a black polished ceramic bezel ring. The tachymeter scale on the bezel is processed with Ceragold and satin finish.
The gray main dial is emphasized by black secondary dials and a black dial flange. The applique hour markers are made of 18 carat Moonshine gold and feature lume material on their tips. A unique hour marker was used for the 11 o'clock position. The dial is surrounded by a finely crafted minute, second and split-second track in a matching Moonshine gold tone. The same tone is also used in the markings on the secondary dials.
An image of NASA astronaut Buzz Aldrin exiting the lunar module and descending to the lunar surface is laser-etched on the back of the small running seconds subdial at 9 o'clock. The sword-shaped hour and minute hands and the arrow-shaped chronograph seconds hand are made of 18-karat Moonshine gold and contain lume material.
Aesthetically speaking, this is a truly beautiful watch; From the lines to the polished bracelet with brushed center links, everything combines in perfect harmony with the brushed and polished ears.
To stay true to the original hand-wound Speedmaster, the Apollo 11 limited edition Speedmaster Professional is powered by a manually-wound caliber, the Omega caliber 3861; this caliber now has the Master Chronometer designation from METAS, in addition to the COSC chronometer certification.
This mechanism offers anti-magnetic properties that are resistant to up to 15,000 gauss. Caliber 3861 has a silicone mainspring with Omega's Co-Axial escapement.
This 26 jewel movement is a 3Hz caliber that oscillates at 21,600 vibrations per hour and maintains its power for approximately 50 hours.
In addition to the stainless steel bracelet with a deployant clasp, this watch comes with a comfortable velcro strap with black-plated cork. Also included is a snap ring and a belt changing tool; both are branded Omega.
