TAG Heuer Formula 1 Caliber 5 Review

TAG Heuer Formula 1 Caliber 5 Review

There are many TAG Heuer F1 watches that have a sporty look and can be easily worn almost every day. However, there is a model in this series that dazzles me with its design. The model we are focusing on today is the one with reference number waz2011.ba0843 and has a bracelet made of stainless steel and dark gray ceramic.

The dark gray sunray dial uses lume-filled, applique hour markers for all hour markers except the 12 and 6 positions; There are lume-filled Roman numerals at the 12 and 6 positions. A white printed seconds and split-second scale surrounds the dial; At position 12, a downward-facing red triangle with white inside is printed.

The hour and minute hands are made of polished steel and filled with a glow-in-the-dark material. The second hand has a red tip and a TAG Heuer symbol on the opposite end as a counterweight. At position 3 there is a date window with a thin rectangular white frame. This date function can be adjusted with the crown in the same way you use to set the time of the watch.

The new 43mm case is water resistant to 200m/600ft and features a solid steel caseback with radial brushed finish, featuring a formula 1 checkered flag pattern engraved around the TAG Heuer branding.

What is the TAG Heuer automatic movement? Just above position 6, between the central hour and minute hands and the glowing number six, is printed TAG HEUER FORMULA 1 in all capital letters and in white, and just below it is printed CALIBRE 5 in capital letters and in red. This is the name of the mechanism.

Some other models in the F1 Automatic 43 mm collection have a small sub-dial at the 6 position. There are currently three models with this sub-dial variation. Reference number waz2014.ba0842 with blue dial, waz2013.ba0842 with white dial and model number waz2012.ba0842 with black dial. These three models work with the TAG Heuer Caliber 6 movement, not Caliber 5 as in the model we introduced here and the waz2011.ba0842 model, which is very similar to the one here, only without the two-tone bracelet.

When you first receive your TAG F1 automatic watch, it will most likely be completely discharged. You will need to wind it completely using the crown before you start working. This watch has a screw-down crown that locks securely to the case to prevent water from entering the case and damaging the mechanism. Therefore, before attempting to wind the watch, unfasten the screw-down crown from the case by pressing down and turning it counterclockwise, then wind the watch with the crown in the down/neutral position.

How to install Formula 1 automatically? The watch can be wound by using the winding crown on the side of the caseby turning it clockwise approximately 30-40 times. This fully compresses the mainspring, allowing the watch to run throughout the power reserve period. While the watch is running, the mainspring gradually releases its tension to the gears, which moves the hour and minute hands. While the watch is on your wrist, the automatic winding rotor activates the self-winding feature. As you move, the rotor turns and constantly "reinforces" the tension in the watch's mainspring.

How to use TAG Heuer Formula 1? The crown used to wind the watch is also used to adjust the time; so you need to make sure the crown is no longer in the screwed down position, then pull the crown and as you turn it you will see the hour and minute hands move. Once your desired time is set, push the crown back and screw it back in to lock it in place and secure the case.

There is an embossed TAG Heuer logo on the crown, as can be seen in one of the close-up high-resolution photos below. It also has vertical grooves on it to give you a solid grip when winding the watch.

This watch provides enough water resistance for some light snorkeling, but it's not really suitable for much more than that. The steel winding crown has a recessed red band in the middle, and its shape has grooves for easy grip when winding the watch.

There is an engraved diving scale on the radial brushed steel gray ceramic bezel and a tag symbol engraved at the starting position of the unidirectional rotating bezel.

One of the most beautiful yet most intricately detailed aesthetic features of this model is the combination of workmanship and materials used in the bracelet. The outer links are brushed stainless steel, while the dark gray ceramic inner links have polished steel caps. The combination of these two materials and craftsmanship creates a very elegant contrast.

The bracelet fits up to an 8-inch wrist and is secured with a push-button deployant clasp that spells out the TAG Heuer brand.

TAG Formula 1 Automatic 43 mm is powered by the TAG Heuer Caliber 5 automatic movement with a 38-hour power reserve. This self-winding caliber with 26 jewels beats at 28,800 oscillations and is an ébauche movement based on the SW200.
