Omega Moonwatch: A new story emerges.

The Speedmaster Moonwatch is arguably one of the most talked about and famous watches produced by Omega. More than 50 years later, Moonwatch is still alive today and continues to go through different phases of growth and innovation.

While much of the above rant is satire and fiction, Neil Armstrong's watch was indeed left in the Lunar module as a spare when the module malfunctioned, thus giving Buzz Aldrin the honor of wearing the first watch while walking on the Moon's surface; that watch was the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch, later known as the Omega Moon Watch.

The Speedmaster Moonwatch collection has grown by giant steps and the range of products in this series has many design variations. Now you can find a Moonwatch with a leather strap, a fabric strap, a white dial, a black dial, a blue dial, or even a meteorite dial!

One thing that has remained very consistent from the 1960s to today is that the Moonwatch was powered by a manual winding (wound by hand) mechanical movement. Neil and Buzz probably had to take off those big puffy astronaut gloves to set up their Moonwatch. Since then, there have been several different mechanical calibers that have powered the Moonwatch.

It is worth noting that the Speedmaster Moonwatch comes in two classes.

On one side, we have the Speedmaster Moonwatch Co-Axial, powered by Caliber 9300. It has a power reserve of 60 hours, contains 54 jewels, and comes with the prestigious title of Chronometer with the COSC certificate, which is a document of its high precision.

There is also the Omega Speedmaster Professional Moonwatch; The new models are powered by Caliber 3861. This movement now comes with both COSC and METAS certification and, of course, the prestigious and highly coveted Master Chronometer designation, a certification of its high precision and resistance to water and electromagnetic interference.

This watch manufacturer has been slowly but steadily adding certain features to its entire collection over the last decade. The work started with Co-Axial escapement, which promises to extend the time between regular service and maintenance. They then introduced the Master Chronometer title, available only to their watches, thanks to rigorous testing at METAS, Switzerland's Federal Institute of Metrology. Having the title of Master Chronometer means that the watch must be more accurate than COSC standards and operate at a precision that does not deviate by more than -0/+5 seconds per day. This is considered perfect precision in mechanical watchmaking.
