We have a nice surprise for you today. We will have the opportunity to take a close, one-on-one look at an exquisite, brand-new Langematik perpetual calendar watch by A. Lange & Söhne, one of the world's leading names in watchmaking and undoubtedly the best in the watchmaking town of Glashütte in the Saxony region of Germany.
A Lange & Söhne Langematik Perpetual Review
The Langematik collection has given life to many impressive watches in the past, and this is what is expected from a high-end watch manufacturer like Lange. The model we will review today from this collection is the reference 310.026 watch, which is an 18-carat white gold version that comes on a black leather strap. Let's examine this watch piece by piece; Let's go into as much detail as possible and not miss any points.
dial
The watch has a matte black dial with a gradually decreasing center circle that passes through three smaller dials. We will explain the functions of these small dials after discussing the main dial that shows the time.
The main dial features a printed railway-style seconds ring that runs around the perimeter of the dial. Inside the seconds ring, there are lume dots at each hour mark/five-minute interval; There is a double lume point at the twelve o'clock position.
Multiple styles of applied and polished hour markers are used: Roman numerals are used at the 10, 11, 12, 1, 2, 5 and 7 positions, and stick-style hour markers are used at the 4 position (single stick), 6 position (double stick) and 8 position (single stick). Since the small dials on the right and left sides of the dial occupy this area, no applied hour markers are used at the 3 and 9 positions.
At the top of the dial, just below the 12 o'clock mark, there is a large, double-window grand date aperture that displays the day of the month in a large, serifed font. Just below the large date window and above the center pin of the hour and minute hands, there is A. Lange & Söhne branding.
Small Dials
A notable mechanical feature of the small dials is that each of the three small dials has a dual function. Let's look at the functions of each of these small dials in a little more detail.
3 o'clock position: The small dial on the right actually has two smaller dials within itself. One of them, with a small polished hand, shows what month it is. It also has a smaller “sub-sub” dial in a contrasting color that shows which year of the 4-year cycle we are in for a leap year. The advantage of a perpetual calendar is that the date does not need to be reset every four years as in an annual calendar clock. The phrase "perpetual calendar" is printed in the space at the top middle of this small dial. 6 o'clock position: This small dial is a window for a moonphase disk and has an integrated small continuous seconds dial; This dial uses a combination of Arabic numerals for the 20, 30 and 40 second positions and finely printed markings on the seconds ring, displayed with a thin, polished hand. The phrase SAX-O-MAT, referring to the mechanism, is printed in the space of this small dial. 9 o'clock position: This small dial has two polished hands. One of them shows the day of the week, printed in a serif font on the outside of the dial. There is a day-night indicator in the central area of this small dial; the bottom half of this area is divided into two with an inverted background and number colors indicating day and night times and is indicated by a small hand.
Hour and Minute Hands
The large central hour and minute hands, which show the current time, are made of 18-carat white gold. The hour, minute, date and month hands have a smooth polished finish and are filled with lume material for excellent visibility in low light conditions.
CASE
Solid 18k white gold case, 38.5 mm in diameter and 10.2 mm thick. It has a polished, fixed-position (non-rotating) bezel ring; The chamfered edge of this ring merges with the brushed center case, creating the appearance of a brushed band next to it. The rounded, polished and horn-shaped lugs curve towards the polished caseback, lifting the back above the surface when the watch lies on its back.
There are recessed buttons and a crown on the left and right sides; These are used for calendar and precise time setting.
Back of the Case
The case back, sealed with 6 screws, features a scratch-resistant, transparent sapphire glass that allows you to see the impressive movement in action.
mechanism
This watch is powered by an automatic movement produced in-house, A. Lange & Söhne's L922.1 SAX-O-MAT caliber. It oscillates at a rate of 21,600 vibrations per hour (i.e. 3 Hz) and has a self-winding micro rotor made of solid 21 carat gold.
workmanship
One of the most amazing things to admire about a Lange watch is how meticulously the various plates are crafted and decorated. Watchmakers tirelessly use a combination of Glashütte rib (very similar to Côtes de Genève/Geneva stripes), Perlage (a pattern of interlocking concentric circular shapes with a radial brushwork finish), polished chamfering, linear brushing and contour grinding. The balance bridge is also meticulously hand-finished, and various other inscriptions are either engraved or embossed on many components and plates. The result? A breathtaking masterpiece!
The combination of all these different craftsmanship techniques makes the mechanism look absolutely amazing, and thanks to the hand engravings, it's a work of art as unique as anything you'd find in a museum. In fact, many of these crafting techniques are so refined that you won't even be able to fully appreciate the detail that goes into it without using a loop or high-end macro photography equipment.
Blued screws and pink watch stones add vibrant color to the many plates and components in caliber L922.1. The movement contains 478 components and has a power reserve of approximately 46 hours.
The movement has a fun “reset” feature where the second hand can be quickly reset to zero position. The way this feature works is reminiscent of how a flyback chronograph works, and is a next-level way to engage the “stop seconds” function for ultra-precise mechanical time setting.
AL&S also offered this function on the 1815 Tourbillon earlier this year. So while this is an impressive feature that happens in a regular time setting and not a chronograph, this isn't the first time they've showcased this nifty reset trick.
Waterproof
It has a waterproof rating of just 30 m/100 ft, which is just enough to safely survive some contact with water, such as washing your hands or being exposed to rain.
Extras
Of course, one of the world's most respected watch manufacturers would not be content with this for such a special watch. The watch comes in a special presentation box with a built-in watch winder to keep it in motion. Watch winders are especially important for perpetual calendar watches, which are more difficult to set if they become completely discharged after not being worn for a period of time.
The watch also comes with a special tool used to set the time using various recessed buttons on the side of the case. To get information about this watch This email address is being protected from spambots. JavaScript must be enabled to view.
