You may be asking yourself: How did Rolex manage to improve an already perfect watch? There is a saying: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Fortunately, Rolex didn't have to wait for something that was already considered a reliable workhorse to break down before improving it. By 1956, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day-Date, with its distinctive President bracelet, was seen on the wrists of world leaders, CEOs, presidents and other senior dignitaries, earning it the Rolex 'President' title it still carries today. As with all Rolex Day-Date President watches released since then, the distinctive Rolex bracelet remains the same; However, many innovations have been made in watch cases, materials used, dials, designs and mechanical movements. Standard features can be expected: the day of the week is displayed in a semicircle at 12 o'clock, the date shows the day of the month in a window at 3 o'clock, and is equipped with a magnifying cyclops lens.

This watch features a patented blue Parachrom mainspring that provides 10 times more impact protection than a regular mainspring. In addition to being waterproof thanks to the oyster case featuring a patented system that involves screwing the bezel, case back and crown against the middle case, a patented Twinlock double water resistance system is integrated into the screw-down crown. This system has two leak-proof zones when the crown is screwed in properly. One is on the crown tube and the other is on the crown itself! The same system is found in the famous Air King watches.

While this system is extremely secure on its own, Rolex's more sea-friendly watches in its Yacht-Master collection feature an even more secure waterproofing system called Triplock. Rolex sports watches, including the Cosmograph Daytona that are not made for diving, generally have excellent water resistance and use the Triplock system.

The reason why the watches in the Presidents Day-Date series do not have the Triplock system is most likely because these are categorically not sports watches, but elegant wear watches. In other words, sea-dweller watches are the kind of watches you would wear with a three-piece suit, rather than a swimsuit or a pilot suit like the Air-King or Sky-Dweller. It is unknown exactly what Rolex's official stance is on this engineering decision; but this seems to be the most logical reason. Among Rolex's many men's watches, this is the first choice collection for many looking for a gold Rolex.

Rolex has also, with its latest innovation in anti-magnetic materials, added a defense mechanism to fend off unwanted EMF signals that could disrupt a watch's mechanics. The nickel-phosphorus Rolex "Chronergy" escapement is one of Rolex's latest patents and prevents magnetic fields from causing interference that could affect the accuracy of the watch.

Most recently, at the Rolex stand at the 2015 BaselWorld, four new products were introduced to the Presidents Day-Date family. These latest products have taken design and attention to detail to even higher levels. Each of the 4 new products can be found in a variety of materials, including Rolex's own alloy, Everose gold, which has that distinctive rose gold tone that can only be found on Rolex watches. They can also be purchased in 950 platinum, 18k white gold and 18k yellow gold. As with all Rolex Day-Date watches, the Day-Date's functions include hours, minutes, seconds, day and date.

Traditionally these watches feature a sunray dial, but Rolex decided to take their dial design up a few levels and applied laser motifs. These new motifs now add textures and patterns to the already beautiful sunray dial. In addition to the new designs, Rolex has also introduced several new dial colors to the equation: Ice Blue, Silver, Sundust, Champagne, and Meteorite...yes, an actual piece of meteorite.

While the aesthetic changes to this series are pretty obvious and beautiful, there are also a few internal improvements. Oyster Perpetual Day-Date 40 now features the new in-house movement caliber 3255, which is a brand new innovation for this superior chronometer and gives it a 70-hour power reserve. The best just keeps getting better with Rolex President Day-Date. COSC certified and Rolex in-house certified, this movement has exceptional precision and is one of the most precise of all mechanical (non-quartz) movements on the market. After receiving chronometer designation from COSC, the caliber is sent back to Rolex where it is adjusted to minimum (-2/+2 seconds per day) precision, which is even higher than COSC standards (-4/+6 seconds per day).
