“Breitling VS Zenith: Which brand is more famous?”

When it comes to brand equity and brand awareness, we need to reference data to back it up. There is an organization called Interbrand that measures Switzerland's most valuable brands. They publish a top 50 list every year (viewable at bestswissbrands.com), and in 2016 Breitling made the list of the top 50 Swiss brands. Breitling is the 41st most recognized Swiss brand, with an estimated brand value of CHF 359,000,000.

Although Breitling is better known as a Swiss brand, the real question to ask is "which is the more prestigious watch manufacturer, Zenith or Breitling?" it would be.

“Which is the more prestigious brand to wear, Zenith or Breitling?”

Zenith is a very famous watch manufacturer with what is probably the most precise column-wheel chronograph mechanism in the world, known as El Primero. In fact, in the very old days when Rolex did not produce its own calibers, it used El Primero calibers in its Cosmograph Daytona watches. By doing this and many other watchmaking achievements, Zenith has become a prestigious and respected brand in the luxury watch community.

Even today, any serious watch collector has an El Primero in their collection, and 9 out of 10 serious watch collectors would recommend a Zenith over a Breitling. At the same time, Breitling has captured its own corner of the market and appeals to a certain audience within the watch community with its special watches. In a sense, they have their own market segment and don't need to try to outdo other players on the scene.

“Which one produces a more precise watch?”

As you probably already know, the difference in a watch's accuracy can be easily determined by taking a closer look at the mechanism. Although Zenith produces very precisemechanical chronographs with high-vibration El Primero movements oscillating at 36,000 VpH, it only produces mechanical watches. Mechanical watches work by gradually releasing the tension in the mainspring of the watch.

Some of the most precise mechanical watches go through COSC, a third-party organization, to determine the accuracy and precision of the watch's mechanism. When the mechanism meets the required specifications and is accurate to -4/+6 seconds per day, it receives the title of Chronometer. This is also known as COSC certification; It is the highest title for a mechanical watch. However, there are other types of watches on the market that are even more precise.

Quartz watches have been around since the 1970s, and quartz watches use batteries to send a charge to a quartz crystal, which has a much higher frequency than even the high-vibration El Primero mechanism, and is therefore more accurate than a mechanical watch. So the truth is that an XXX watch can tell time better than an XXX watch. Life is full of such ironic surprises.

However, quartz watches also have their own issues that can affect their accuracy; for example, exposure to electromagnetic interference (i.e., x-ray machines, dentist offices, certain medical equipment, and consumer electronics, which all emit an EMF).

COSC recognized that not all quartz watches are created equal and developed a series of tests to determine whether a quartz watch deserves COSC certification. Since the cost of obtaining COSC certification on a quartz watch is quite high, most watch manufacturers that produce quartz movements do not have them COSC certified. But Breitling is known for going that extra mile and has the trademarked name SuperQuartz; This is a Quartz Chronometer with an accuracy of remarkable 0.02 seconds per day!

Zenith may have the most precise mechanical chronograph, which is also a COSC chronometer, but by comparison Breitling produces the most precise watches; These are also COSC certified Quartz Chronometers. The question is whether you specifically have your mind set on a mechanical watch, such as an automatic (self-winding) watch, or whether any watch will do, as long as it tells the time and is reliable.

“Which brand produces more durable watches, Breitling or Zenith?”

Having owned many watches from both brands, Breitlings are generally built as solid as a tank; and perhaps with the exception of the El Primero Stratos Flyback America's Limited Edition and the pilot's watch known as the Pilot Montre Aeronef Type 20 GMT, Zenith watches generally have a more classic feel and don't appear to have any heavy-duty, military-grade application to this brand's cases, which house very carefully assembled mechanical movements.

Breitling also produces many mechanical watches. However, many Breitling watches are powered by quartz movements, which allows fewer things to go wrong inside the watch in the event of an impact, such as dropping the watch and hitting the ground. I'd bet on the Breitling because of how solidly built they are, but quite frankly I wouldn't want to put any Zenith or Breitling watches to a real physical test!

“Which brand will give me a higher resale value, Zenith or Breitling?”

They are probably one of the two most difficult brands to position against each other in terms of resale value, and there are a few reasons for this. First of all, let's say this: you can never look at a watch as an investment. They do not appreciate the way a mutual fund or a REIT appreciates, so watches should never be treated as traditional securities.

Breitling produces tons of watches every year. Zenith doesn't manufacture it and only makes about 40,000 units a year. With the laws of supply and demand, one would think that the resale value of the Breitling would be lower due to production volume; but the truth is that Breitling usually produces a watch for about a year, then tweaks it slightly and reintroduces it with a new dial or similar minor variation, and re-releases it with a new model number. New models that don't sell usually end up in clearance sales at steep discounts within a year or so. However, in that first year or so, there is usually a lot of demand and they sell like crazy.

As with every brand, its resale value does not depend solely on the brand itself—with the possible exception of Rolex. It should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis, hour by hour. Certain models from any brand fetch a higher resale value than certain models from another brand. Also, if a watch has been worn before, many other variables come into play; other variables, such as the condition of the watch, whether it has all the original documentation, its original box, whether it is still under the manufacturer's warranty, and whether it is a limited edition or special edition.

“Who produces better quality watches, Zenith or Breitling?”

Zenith and Breitling both produce very high quality watches. More importantly, their watches appear to be aimed at different market segments. Breitling has many tool watches and ostentatious watches. Zenith makes mechanical watches that are more classically inclined and more refined. You will find high-end quality in both brands, and since they each produce different types of watches, it is difficult to say which is better quality. For example, Breitling produces watches that include a location transmitter for emergencies and rescue teams. They also have smartwatches made specifically for pilots.

In terms of mechanical movements, Breitling was known for using ébauche movements; (a type of template known as base movement) is essentially an ETA mechanism and they are known for evolving it to meet their own needs. This does not mean that ETA mechanisms are bad. In fact, the Valjoux 7750 movement is considered iconic. Zenith, on the other hand, produces its own movements in-house, such as the Zenith Elite and especially the El Primero. In terms of traditional mechanical watchmaking knowledge, I would lean towards Zenith. Breitling has recently introduced several in-house calibers such as the Breitling Caliber 01, Caliber 02, Caliber 03 and Caliber 04.

“Are Breitling chronographs as good as a Zenith El Primero chronograph?”

Yes, if you are talking about their SuperQuartz powered chronographs which only work with a COSC certified Quartz Chronometer and therefore have a ridiculously high oscillation rate. Otherwise, in any mechanical chronograph, the edge goes to Zenith with its world-famous El Primero, which operates at 36,000 vibrations per hour. In fact, most of Zenith's watches are chronographs (watches with a stopwatch function), and for good reason. El Primero is truly a very precise mechanical chronograph!

“Which brand offers a better warranty, Breitling or Zenith?”

Breitling offers a 5-year warranty on its watches. Zenith only offers a 2-year warranty, which is a pretty standard warranty period for any Swiss watch manufacturer, with a few exceptions. But for one particular Zenith watch, on the model known as the Zenith 1969 El Primero A386 Revival (produced to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the El Primero), they offered a 50-year warranty with free service. Now THIS is the greatest display of trust I have ever seen! But for the rest of its watches, you will only have a 2-year warranty period. The idea behind this is that a properly maintained mechanical watch can last a really long time and be passed down from generation to generation as a family heirloom.

“Which watches from Breitling and Zenith are comparable?”

In terms of price, Breitling is generally more expensive. In terms of price point, their watches are a little higher segment than Zenith, but let's focus on function and class, not price. Here are a few examples:
