Many young people who have developed their interest in fine watchmaking can appreciate the richness of a watch from a brand like Vacheron Constantin. It represents a certain status as one of the "Big Three" watch manufacturers, and owning such a watch reflects a certain level of success in a collection.

For most watch enthusiasts, the price of any Vacheron watch is considered higher than most other brands, even if it is an entry-level model like the Patrimony. But it seems executives at Vacheron have decided to open a small door to allow more people into this otherwise extremely exclusive club.

Here it is, the stainless steel FiftySix Automatic with a suggested retail price of under XXX. It is the only current collection to use both numeral and index hour markers (other than the pillow-shaped Quai de L'Ile collection, which is priced at XXX and above).

This vintage-inspired watch of the modern age; It offers a classic look with a smoothly polished, elegantly shaped case and softly curved ears. It is designed with two different chapter rings, one on the inner dial and the other around the dial, and both have railway-style minute and seconds tracks. A small, single-disc date window fits comfortably at position 3.

A finely brushed sunray dial radiates from the inner chapter ring to the geared outer seconds track on the dial. This leaves a sector dial with matte finish in the center. Polished numerals are used at the 12, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 positions, and lume coated index hour markers are used at the positions in between. The lume-coated pen-shaped hour and minute hands made of polished white gold make this stainless steel watch even more attractive.

This model comes with a matching blue alligator strap with a push-button deployant buckle. The clasp is designed to look like half of a heraldic Maltese cross; This is the same cross that Vacheron Constantin uses in its logo at the top of the sector dial.

The case back of Vacheron Constantin's 40 mm FiftySix self-winding watch reveals a magnificently crafted caliber, the 25-jewel, self-made Vacheron Constantin caliber 1326. It's a 4Hz self-winding movement that vibrates 28,800 times per hour; It has a 48 hour +/- power reserve and has a beautifully crafted 22 carat solid gold rotor.

The strap is made of high quality and durable crocodile leather with blue stitching. For extra comfort, softer light brown calfskin is used on the inside of the strap that touches your skin.

Will this watch ever become iconic in some way? Who knows? Vacheron's marketing team certainly claims that this is a vintage-inspired reinterpretation of an iconic watch. How much of this is marketing hype? It's up to you to decide. There is no one in the watch community who remembers the icon they are talking about, which kind of defeats the purpose of calling it iconic. Still, this is the kind of watch that isn't overpriced by any means. In fact, compared to any other Vacheron Constantin watch, it's probably even cheaper than it should be.

All in all, the quality is definitely there and the craftsmanship you expect from a Vacheron Constantin watch is undoubtedly here. All in all, this series offers tremendous value at a lower-than-expected price point. It's certainly not the brand's flagship watch, but it is a nice watch with a timeless design from a highly reputable brand at a very competitive price.

FiftySix Automatic 40mm Review

This is the most affordable series in the FiftySix collection and features a three-hand watch and a date window. Different models within this series have a variation either in case material, dial color or strap/bracelet color and type.

FiftySix Day-Date 40mm Review

This series offers a Day-Date feature displayed on two sub-dials; There is a date subdial at position 3 and a month subdial at position 9. There is also a power reserve indicator at position 6. While this series has a busier look than the model featured here, with only a small date window on the right side of the dial, it still looks classic.

Vacheron Constantin FiftySix Day-Date works with a different mechanism than the standard FiftySix. The Day-Date model is powered by a Vacheron Constantin 2475 SC/2. Like the more affordable model, this self-made movement is an automatic caliber that beats 28,800 vibrations per hour. It contains 27 hour stones and has a power reserve of approximately 40 hours +/-.

FiftySix Complete Calendar 40mm Review

The FiftySix Complete Calendar has a simpler look than the aforementioned FiftySix Day-Date, but a slightly more lively look than the standard FiftySix, which has only a date window on the right side of the dial. This series has two windows at position 12, just below the Vacheron Constantin logo. It has a blue hand to indicate the day of the month and a moon phase window at the 6 position.

This series does not have an outer chapter ring because it uses a hand to indicate the date, pointing to numbers printed in a sans-serif font around the dial where the second track is normally located.
