Add to this an 18k rose gold case and a leather strap, and your wrist will look like royalty. The AP Royal Oak watch is highly sought-after among celebrities like Jay-Z, Tom Brady, Neil Patrick Harris (who owns two, as far as we know), and many more. It can also be seen on the wrists of industry giants, heads of state and royalty.

What made this watch so popular? Or rather, who made it such an iconic model for this high-end watch manufacturer? AP can thank legendary watch designer Gerald Genta for that. He is a watch designer of the highest caliber, having designed some of the world's most iconic luxury watches throughout his illustrious career. What is interesting about their designs is that some of their most famous works had unusual geometry and often featured octagonal or polygonal cases. Many watch manufacturers have produced watches with designs inspired by Gerald Genta, but what you see here is the real deal.

There are models in this collection that come in several different design variations. Currently, only a few AP Royal Oak 41 mm models come with an 18k rose gold case. Ironically, most stainless steel models on the market are priced significantly higher than 18k rose gold models, and that's simply because of how popular they are.

Supply and demand at work at their best. Audemars Piguet was one of the first watch manufacturers to charge a hefty price tag for a stainless steel watch. In the world of watchmaking, this was a groundbreaking moment where the value lay not in the raw materials used but in the case of the watch. This ancient craft was no longer considered worthless and was receiving the recognition it deserved. If people wanted a high-quality watch from a high-end manufacturer, they would now pay top price even if the case was made of steel and not a precious metal like gold or platinum.

While stainless steel is a popular material often found in some of the most on-trend sporty watches, the 18k rose gold case bears exquisite brushed craftsmanship with polished chamfered edges, offering a more versatile look that can be carried with formal, semi-formal or casual wear. This watch is available with two different leather straps. One is a black alligator/crocodile strap and the other is a brown alligator strap.

Audemars Piguet Royal Oaks feature a signature style with an octagonal-shaped bezel with eight visible screws around the bezel and a textured dial with a checkerboard pattern, known as the Grande Tapisserie dial. There is no shame in being unique, and since the 1970s newer models of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watches XXX have been released with much higher price tags. Apparently the visible screws were a big hit!

A 41mm model of the Royal Oak Automatic watches produced today comes with a black leather strap, and the one seen above is a fine example with model number 15500.or.oo.d002cr.01. It has a black grande tapisserie dial with appliqued 18k rose gold hour markers, filled with lume material for high visibility in low-light conditions. There is a finely printed seconds track on the edge of the dial and a date window at 3 o'clock. The AP logo is located on the cover of the octagonal crown. This crown is used for winding the watch, setting the time and setting the date.

The dial is protected by a scratch-resistant sapphire glass, and the case back has a clear sapphire glass protecting the mechanism, which is visible from the back of the case. This watch is powered by the homemade AP Caliber 4302 automatic movement, which oscillates at a rate of 4Hz, or 28,800 vibrations per hour. It contains 32 stones and can maintain its power for up to 3 days (70 hours) when fully set.
