Omega Planet Ocean 600m Co-Axial Master Chronometer GMT Review

Since the emergence and success of the Speedmaster Dark Side of The Moon series, Omega has been increasingly producing dark black editions. This combination of more modern design with feature-rich watches allows Omega to move towards the forefront of the market and offer watches that are both highly advanced mechanically and up-to-date and contemporary in design.

The Seamaster Planet Ocean 600m Co-Axial Master Chronometer GMT was released following Basel 2016 and is a fine example of Omega creating a watch that can serve multiple purposes while also looking great.

There's no shortage of dive watches on the market, and certainly no shortage of GMT watches... even ones made by Omega. But Omega decided to make something that would look and work great on the wrist whether dry or drenching wet, and wanted to offer a little more for their money to those considering buying watches with similar features from competitors.

Mechanical Family History

Master Chronometer is a certification that has started to appear on many Omega watches in the last few years. This term means that Omega has taken various steps to maximize the accuracy and reliability of the caliber. COSC certification indicates that the watch has a mechanical accuracy of -4/+6 seconds per day.

Once the movement has received COSC certification, it is sent to another laboratory, this time at the Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology (known as METAS), where it receives the "MASTER CHRONOMETER" certificate after additional tests in the areas of water resistance, magnetic resistance, as well as outstanding performance and reliability. A caliber that is a Master Chronometer must achieve an accuracy score of at least -0/+5 seconds per day. For a more detailed report on METAS testing for the Master Chronometer, read our article where we cover the subject in detail.

Caliber 8906 Automatic Movement

The mechanical movement used in this watch is Omega 8906, which has the following features:

In-house caliber (manufactured by Omega) COSC Chronometer Certification METAS Chronometer certification for its performance Operates at a frequency of 25,200 VPH / vibration per hour / 3.5Hz Co-Axial escapement requires less frequent maintenance Omega's antimagnetic mechanism using a Si14 silicon mainspring is also highly resistant to shocks and increases the reliability of the watch Arabesque wave design workmanship on the bridges and rotor 60 hours of power reserve

Case Features

Both brushed and polished in certain areas, the ceramic case offers the scratch resistance of ceramic while mimicking the look of metal. Most non-magnetic watches have an antimagnetic plate protecting the movement and therefore do not offer a transparent case back. However, this watch's mechanism itself can resist magnetic fields of up to 15,000 gauss. This allows for a window through which you can view the beauty of the movement. The Deep Black case has a very similar appearance to the Speedmaster Dark-Side-Of-The-Moon cases. Slightly domed, scratch-resistant sapphire glass with anti-reflective coating on both surfaces. 45.5 mm case size, thanks to its design, it does not look oversized when worn on the wrist. Vulcanized rubber bezel in the 15-minute scale area. Helium release valve in the 10 position.

Dial Features

Matte black ceramic dial with Zr02 (zirconium oxide) inscription above the 6 position. White gold hour, minute and second hands with brushed finish and green-toned light-emitting lume feature. Blue-tone light-emitting lume-filled white gold stick hour markers. Blue Arabic numerals on the hour markers at the 6, 9 and 12 positions. Matching with the blue details on the case, on the back of the hour and minute hands. GMT hand in blue arrow shape with lume tip

Strap Options

The strap that comes with this watch is made of deep black rubber with a woven texture and features blue stitching that matches the blue details on the case. The rubber strap closes with a push-release folding buckle. Omega also produces NATO straps with which you can give your watch any look. These are additional accessories that can usually be purchased from Omega stores.

Style Options

Besides this striking blue style with blue details on the case and blue stitching on the rubber strap, there are a few other styles that come with a rubber strap. There is also a higher-end version with 18-carat Sedna (rose gold) details and a leather strap.
