Jaeger LeCoultre Geophysic Universal Time Review
It's not often that I get the opportunity to write a review of such a beautiful watch like this (JLC Model No: 8102520), so I'll get straight to the point. Many people associate a mechanical watch, especially a high-end Swiss watch, with a sliding second hand. This means that the seconds hand gracefully rotates on the dial "without a break" at the beginning of each second. Traditionally, this is how an automatic watch like the one you're looking at now works. Those that usually have a ticking second hand are cheap, battery-powered watches.
There are exceptions to this when it comes to Swiss watches, but they are quite rare. This watch is one of those exceptions. A mechanical watch with a ticking seconds hand. In horology, this is called the Dead Beat mechanism (not to be confused with a broken clock that does not work). This watch has a separate mainspring for the second hand. This is positioned towards the middle of the movement and allows the watch to maintain its amplitude, even though the ticking seconds require extra force to jump each second.
It takes a great watchmaker to change the nature of mechanical things contrary to the way they are supposed to work. Jaeger LeCoultre is one of those rare watch manufacturers that doesn't hesitate to think outside the box. Historically, they have designed and produced some of the most complex mechanical watches in the world. A while ago, we reviewed such a watch along with its video; You can read that review here.
The difference between the watch above and the watch we review here is the mechanism. While the watch shown in the video above is powered by the Jaeger-LeCoultre Caliber 770, the watch we review here is powered by JLC's own production caliber 772 movement, which also uses a Gyrolab® balance that operates at 28,800 vph. This self-winding movement contains 36 jewels, consists of 274 parts and has a power reserve of approximately 40 hours.
The dial of this watch is probably its most distinguishing feature. It is a world time with a more compact design than a standard JLC watch. The striking blue globe on the dial features matte rose gold continents.
The hour markers are positioned closer to the center than you'll see on a JLC watch. This is because the outer perimeter of the dial is devoted to the names of the world's leading cities printed in red and blue. There are 24 cities in this time zone ring, and they are shown in two colors for a reason; Those shown in blue indicate that it is night in that area.
The rose gold hour and minute hands are lume filled, and unlike most watches, the hour hand and date can be adjusted forward or backward without damaging the movement. Jaeger LeCoultre is known for its meticulous testing and meticulous watchmaking. Each watch undergoes an intensive 1000-hour inspection test lasting approximately 41 days. There is no other watch manufacturer that conducts this level of intensive testing.
