Breguet Heritage Chronograph Review
I'm not really one to write a review of a discontinued watch, but we just received a factory-restored Breguet Heritage Chronograph, model number 560ba/12/996, in 18k yellow gold and with a brand new original alligator leather strap. Normally a chronograph with a tonneau (barrel-shaped) case isn't the kind of thing that would interest me; It was like that until now.
However, this watch has a distinctive appearance with its oval-rectangular shape and Breguet's signature coin-edged case. Additionally, the guilloche dial uses a few different patterns that you don't see every day. While the inner main dial uses a diamond dot pattern, the secondary dials have a wavy pattern.
Black printed Roman numerals are used for the hour markers on the dial, and there is also a black second/minute track on the edge of the dial. Heritage Chrono uses Breguet-style hands on both the central hour and minute hands and the subdial hands. Another thing you'll notice on the dial is the small embossed Breguet logo printed on either side of the Roman numeral XII at twelve o'clock; At 6 o'clock, you will find the small seconds dial and the date window.
The movement is a Breguet caliber 550. A column wheel chronograph that oscillates steadily at 3 Hz or 21,600 VpH. This automatic movement has 47 jewels and offers a power reserve of approximately 48 hours. Even though it has a closed case back and this eye-catching movement cannot be seen through a transparent sapphire glass, let it be known that it is really worth seeing. The workmanship on the various plates and rotor is outstanding and exactly the quality you would expect from a brand like Breguet.
Overall, this 5460ba/12/996 model has a semi-formal or even formal look rather than sporty, with a more conservative case size of 38.7 mm x 32 mm. However, newer models use a larger case size of 42 mm x 35 mm.
Two of the newer Breguet Heritage Chronograph models, such as the rose gold model 5400br/12/9v6 with a brown leather strap, or the 18k white gold model 5400bb/12/9v6 with a black leather strap and silver dial, have a much sportier look. The guilloche dials on these new models are quite lively compared to the old models. While the older model 5460ba/12/996 used only two types of patterns (one for the dial and one for the subdials), the engraved guilloche dial and subdials of the new models from 2015 use several rather creative-looking patterns that give the dial a more dimensional appearance.
That's not the only thing that's changed. You'll notice that the seconds and minute track are now printed on a round-shaped inner dial, rather than around the tonneau-shaped dial as the 2015 models used to do. Another thing you'll notice is that the Roman numerals on the new 2015 models are no longer printed; On the contrary, they are made of metal and are a part of the dial itself.
Breguet's signature coin edge on the case was, as expected, one of the things they carried over to the new models. However, they started using the new Breguet caliber 550/1, which was built on its predecessor, caliber 550. This movement has a slightly better power reserve compared to its predecessor (52 hours versus 48 hours) and has a magnetic-resistant silicone mainspring.
