Aquaracer VS Seamaster

We frequently receive calls and reply to emails from people trying to decide between two dive watches. We get asked all kinds of questions about the differences between brands. In addition, we are often curious about the differences in features and specifications between various watches of these brands. Most of the time, all these questions are expressed as a single question that is not very clear where it comes from: "Which one is better?"

While both of these watches are excellent dive watches in their own right, we like to get to the root of the question, understand the context it comes from, in order to truly give you the answer you are looking for.

Let's compare these two watches in many aspects; including but not limited to:

Water resistance Features designed especially for divers Construction and workmanship Brand prestige and brand awareness

Aesthetics Chronometric precision Warranty periods Resale value

We will also try to cover any other considerations that may come to your mind when considering purchasing such an important product.

Omega Seamaster Pros and Cons

Pros

Longer Power Reserve - 48-hour power reserve allows you to keep the watch off your wrist for longer before the mainspring is completely discharged. Co-Axial Escapement - Omega Co-Axial escapement allows you to leave longer intervals between regular maintenance and mechanical services. Precision - Omega Seamaster 300M is a COSC certified Chronometer. This means it has passed 3rd party chronometric testing to ensure accuracy of -4/+6 seconds per day. When this level of precision is reached, the watch is given the title of Chronometer. Longer Warranty Period - Omega increased the warranty period to 5 years shortly after incorporating the Co-Axial escapement into its mechanism. Brand Prestige - The Omega brand is more prestigious than TAG Heuer and is a more internationally recognized brand than TAG Heuer. In fact, Omega is the 2nd most well-known Swiss watch brand in the world, with only one watch manufacturer on it, Rolex. Resale Value - Omega generally sees a higher average resale value than TAG Heuer. Of course, many variables are taken into account when evaluating every watch, and the model itself is often one of them. The James Bond / 007 Connection - Ever since Pierce Brosnan graced the world with his role as 007 in GoldenEye, every James Bond character has had a Seamaster on their wrist. Yes, he may be a fictional MI-6 superspy (…or is he?) but people often identify with these attractive archetypes and imitate them with their fashion.

Cons

Higher Price Tag - The list price of Omega Seamaster Diver 300M is about XXX more than the TAG Heuer Aquaracer 500M Caliber 5. Water Resistance - The Seamaster Diver is water resistant to 300 meters (1,000 feet), compared to the 500 meters (1,650 feet) water resistance of the Aquaracer 500m Caliber 5. Weight on the Wrist – The Seamaster is a heavier watch than this particular Aquaracer, and a big part of that has to do with the case material. While the TAG is made of lightweight titanium, the Omega is made of a heavier metal, steel. Strap Options - Although Seamaster's steel bracelet feels heavier on the wrist than Aquaracer's rubber strap, there is a good side to this. There is a different model of the Seamaster Diver 300M that comes with an extremely lightweight NATO (fabric) strap in addition to the steel bracelet. This model, coincidentally, is the new 007 James Bond Commander watch. Scratches - After installing the Seamaster Diver 300M, you will notice that its stainless steel case scratches more frequently than the titanium carbide (TiC) coated titanium case of the Aquaracer model wak2180.ft6027.

TAG Heuer Aquaracer Pros and Cons

Pros

Lower Price Tag - The list price of the Aquaracer 500M Caliber 5 is approximately XXX less than a Seamaster Diver 300M. Water Resistance - This TAG is water resistant to 500 meters (1,650 feet) compared to the Seamaster's 300 meters (1,000 feet). Weight on the Wrist - While the Aquaracer is made of lightweight titanium, the Seamaster is a heavier stainless steel watch, and a lot of that has to do with the case material and its stainless steel bracelet compared to the rubber strap. Strap Options - Aquaracer's rubber strap feels lighter on the wrist, as we mentioned before. There are also different models that come with a heavier steel bracelet. Scratches - The titanium case with titanium carbide (TiC) coating of the Aquaracer model wak2180.ft6027 featured here is highly scratch resistant compared to the stainless steel material used in the construction of the Seamaster.

Cons

Shorter Power Reserve - A 38-hour power reserve allows you to remove the watch from your wrist for less time before the mainspring is completely discharged, compared to the Seamaster's 48-hour power reserve. No Co-Axial Escapement - Omega Co-Axial escapement allows you to leave longer intervals between regular maintenance and mechanical services. Therefore, the Aquaracer will need more frequent service. Precision - TAG Heuer Aquaracer is not a COSC certified Chronometer like the Omega Seamaster. This means it can technically run faster or slower than the Omega. TAG stated that they did not bear the additional cost of having their mechanisms tested by a 3rd party such as COSC in order to keep the price more attractive and pass this savings on to the consumer. However, there is no way to prove they have the same precision without chronometric testing by COSC. Shorter Warranty Period - Shortly after introducing the Co-Axial escapement, Omega increased the warranty period to 5 years. TAG Heuer, on the other hand, only has a 2-year warranty period. Lower Resale Value - TAG Heuer watches generally see a lower average resale value than Omega, and much of this has to do with brand value and prestige. However, you may find some TAG Heuer models or older Heuer watches that fetch a higher resale value due to their rarity. Brand Prestige - TAG Heuer's brand prestige is lower than that of the Omega brand. Brand Awareness - TAG is a less internationally recognized brand compared to Omega. In fact, they are the 15th most recognized Swiss watch brand, compared to Omega, which is the 2nd most recognized Swiss watch brand in the world. No 007 Connection - Although the Aquaracer has never appeared in any 007 movies, the Diver, model number 980.031, did once appear. It's actually hard to tell which brand it is, because TAG purchased Heuer watches during the filming of the James Bond movie "The Living Daylights" starring Timothy Dalton. So it could either be a model with the TAG Heuer logo, or an older model with the Heuer logo.

Which One Should I Buy?

In terms of diving features, the Aquaracer 500M Caliber 5 seems to offer more at a lower price.

However, in terms of precision, brand prestige, brand awareness, warranty period, service and maintenance and second-hand value… Seamaster 300M wins. Of course, this comes at a higher cost than Aquaracer.

Both brands are historically important. Both brands are great and have some pretty iconic watches, very reliable and high quality watches. Both brands have models with scratch-resistant ceramic bezels. Both brands have abundant production and availability; Many models can be found on both the new and second-hand market.

To answer this question specifically for you, you'll likely need to weigh the things you value most in a watch against the price. Once you do this, you will discover which aspects of each watch you find most valuable. This will help you determine whether it's worth spending more money on things like brand prestige and resale value.
