Rolex has always been synonymous with high-performance motorsport and the Rolex Daytona is the world's most recognized chronograph. The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona watch series was first introduced in 1963 and features many impressive designs, such as the highly polished and stylish Rolex Daytona Steel and Gold (Model number 116523 White Index) featured below. These are COSC-certified Superlative Chronometer watches, the highest designation that can be obtained from the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute for a mechanical watch.

Why is the Rolex Daytona the World's Most Famous Chronograph?

Let's take a closer look at this iconic watch series. The Rolex Daytona features an extremely reliable chronograph and a tachymeter bezel that allows speed measurement up to 400 miles or kilometers per hour. The name "Daytona" appears in red on the dial, at the top of the bottom subdial, on most models. For those who don't follow motor racing, this name symbolizes the famous races at Daytona International Speedway in Florida. Opened in 1959, this track is the site of the Daytona 500, the most prestigious NASCAR race.

There are several collections in the series and their prices differ from each other. At the top is the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Platinum (model number 116506LN) with Ice Dial and Baguette Diamond markings. This watch has a chestnut brown Cerachrom bezel made of ceramic, which is extremely durable, very hard and highly resistant to scratches. It also has high resistance to corrosion and is not affected by ultraviolet light, which can cause colors to fade. Of course, with such impressive features comes an equally impressive list price of XXX (watch shown below). There are other Daytona watches that changed hands for higher prices, such as the Lemon dial Paul Newman Daytona watch sold at XXX, but we will have to save that for a completely different article.

Leaving aside the Rolex Daytona Rose Gold watches (shown above), which are made from their signature red or rose gold alloy, known in the industry as Everose® gold; The most popular watches in this series are stainless steel models. However, Rolex recently discontinued production of several Rolex Daytona Stainless Steel watches. Namely, there were 2 versions of Daytona reference no 116520; one is White Dial and the other is Black Dial. These featured polished stainless steel fixed bezels and are being replaced by two new models bearing newer Cerachrom bezels made from high-density ceramic material. This duo was among the most popular models in the series; They are now replaced by the Rolex Daytona ref 116500LN Black and 116500LN White.

With the introduction of these two new steel Daytona watches, it seems like the world can't get enough of them... and Rolex can't make enough either. These are probably the hardest watches to get hold of right now. You'll have to wait a really long time, maybe years, to get your hands on one. Whether you are a novice watch collector or a Rockefeller, you still have to wait in line. The Daytona has been described as the most desired watches in the world despite the fact that they both have a very low price tag under XXX. These are the kind of Rolex watches that, once purchased, have the potential to be resold for above list price. An automatic chronograph movement, a tachymeter scale, a large central chronograph seconds hand, a crown that screws into the case, a bit of water resistance and that's it. Apart from the stopwatch function, there is no day-date display or fancy complications. I already take my hat off to anyone lucky enough to own one of these beauties.
