Patek Philippe Perpetual Calendar Retrograde Date Review
Patek Philippe has always been a brand that attracts people's attention. While some of this has to do with their status as watch manufacturers, what sometimes stands out is the attention to detail they put into their watches; both in the design phase and in workmanship.
One thing that has always impressed me is all the meticulous craftsmanship and engraving on their calibers. This laborious process is done by hand and allows the various plates on the movement and the rotor to be machined in such a way that they shine and refract light, turning a mechanical watch into a piece of jewellery.

Let's take a closer look at the dial of this watch. You can see a few things clearly. Some look normal, but some look quite unusual. For example, the combination of Roman numerals for hour markers and Arabic numerals for five-minute intervals for minute markers... one placed on top of the other. It's not something you see every day, but it clearly has a practical purpose and added value to the design.
The retrograde date display uses Roman numerals in a classic serif font and allows the red-tipped date hand to move along a path on an inner ring, starting at position 7 and ending at position 4.
There is a month window to the right of the retrograde date display at position 3. On the left, at position 9, there is a window showing the day of the week.
Just above the 6 position is the moon phase indicator, which shows the moon and stars in gold on a midnight blue background.
An interesting point about the moon phase complication is that it remains accurate for up to 122 years and 45 days. After this period, only a 1-day correction is required to be fully ready for the next 122 years and 45 days. So the moon phase complication on this watch will probably run longer and more consistently than any of us!
Patek Philippe stands out among only a few watch manufacturers that can truly showcase its expertise in many areas of fine watchmaking.
Especially in the field of Haute Horlogerie (high horlogerie), such as the various Grande Complications watches. This segment of watchmaking is reserved only for the most exclusive watch manufacturers.
The watch featured here is the model with reference number 5159j-001; It uses the new Spiromax® balance mainspring, unlike older models that use the same caliber 324 S QR but use the Gyromax® balance mainspring.
So why is Spiromax better? Spiromax is made from Silinvar® and uses a patented, unique terminal curve.

The 18k yellow gold case is 38mm wide with a case thickness of 11.8mm and is beautifully polished. The strap can be seen secured to the gold lugs with solid gold screws.
