Longines VS Oris Comparison
Both of these brands produce excellent quality watches, but we are still often asked: “Which is better, Oris or Longines?” You can literally search for hours from all the watch enthusiasts on online forums and Twitter in hopes of finding an answer that will satisfy you. But to really answer these questions accurately, it is necessary to consider the context of the question; because it can mean different things to different people. For example:
"Which is better, Longines or Oris?" question can refer to any of the following:
(Click on any question below to jump to the answer section.)
Which brand produces more precise watches? Which is more prestigious? Which is more famous? Which one offers finer workmanship? Which is more durable? Which diver's watch is better? Which one has better average resale value? Which one has better price and value?
That being said, let's tackle each of these questions to give you a clearer picture of how you can compare two watch manufacturers and which one is better suited for you and your unique needs. Shall we begin?
Accuracy and Precision
In the watchmaking industry, this is called 'chronometry'; This is defined as the science of accurate time measurement. The Swiss Institute of Chronometry (originally known as 'Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres' in French), or COSC for short, is the industry standard for testing movements for high precision.
First, the movement is removed from the case and sent to COSC for testing. After passing a series of tests, the mechanical movement (also known as the caliber) is given the designation 'Chronometer' and receives a COSC certificate certifying its accuracy. The mechanical caliber must achieve an accuracy of not less than -4/+6 seconds as an acceptable daily deviation.
For a mechanical watch, this is a perfect score. However, a COSC certification comes with the additional expense of obtaining the certification from COSC. There are some brands that do not prefer COSC testing and do their own tests in order to keep prices low and profits high.
Both Oris and Longines have watches that come with COSC certification and proudly display the Chronometer designation on their dials, as shown in the image above. The Oris Artelier Chronometer Date is a great example of a highly accurate Oris watch. Longines also has some great Chronometers, such as the watches in the Longines Record collection.
Brand Popularity and Brand Value
Longines is a historically rich brand that has been producing Swiss watches for what seems like forever. In fact, the famous winged logo is the first registered watch logo ever recorded. There are only a few Swiss watch brands with greater brand awareness and brand value than Longines.
According to a recent report from Interbrand, an agency that evaluates Swiss companies and brands and ranks the top 50 Swiss brands, Longines is the 5th most popular Swiss watch brand in the world. The only Swiss watch brands that surpass them in this list are Rolex, Omega, Patek Philippe and Chopard respectively. Of course, the list also includes Swiss chocolate manufacturers and Swiss banks, but in terms of watch manufacturers, they are number 5.
It is not included in the Top 50 list of Swiss brands such as Oris and Longines. However, although Oris is less globally known than Longines, it is a very popular brand. You also need to consider this fact: Longines is a subsidiary of the Swatch Group, a much larger parent company that owns many of the larger and more popular Swiss luxury watch brands. There are only a handful of privately owned Swiss watch companies left in the world with the brand recognition of Oris (which is considered very impressive). Is Oris a luxury brand? This term is relative to the person asking the question. They are generally considered a luxury brand for those who spend less than XXX on a watch. For those who have the habit of spending five figures or more on a watch, Oris is not that luxurious. Many people see them as a lower-end or, let's say, more accessible luxury brand.
workmanship
In terms of watchmaking knowledge, both brands are almost on equal footing. On the one hand, Oris produces only mechanical watches, while Longines produces both mechanical and quartz watches. Mechanical watches are generally more difficult to manufacture.
Oris is known for its signature red rotor design. High-end Oris watches tend to be more heavy-duty, sporty models designed for diving professionals. High-end Longines watches tend to be more refined classic watches with more mechanical complications. Some popular collections of classic watches are called Longines Heritage Classic and Flagship Heritage collections.
Longines also has many sports models such as the Longines Conquest collection and the Hydroconquest series. Overall theirs is a more refined watch. They also have around 400% more different watch options for women than Oris, and there are some elegant solid gold models at the higher end of the price range.
durability
Both brands do a great job in terms of durability, but I would say that Oris watches are more durable and therefore require less maintenance and repair. An Oris watch (especially a high-end sports model) is a little more solidly built and better equipped to handle daily use.
Waterproof
Longines has the Hydroconquest series, which offers a case that is waterproof to 300m/1000ft; This is fine for decent swimming, light snorkeling and showering (but not in hot water), but not for anything too adventurous.
Oris watches produce some excellent dive watches with a rotating bezel ring. This bezel is used to set time signatures while diving. Another feature found in most diving watches is the screw-down crown, which seals the case and prevents water from entering from the outside of the case. A great example of a dive watch from Oris is a model called the Oris ProDiver Pointer Moon, which offers a case with 1000m/3280ft water resistance. This particular version of the ProDiver is not only an excellent diver's watch, but it also displays hours, minutes, seconds, and tidal range matching the phase of the moon; This is also an important thing for divers.
It's important to get a realistic idea of what water resistance means in a watch and to know how to properly care for a dive watch to ensure durability and ensure the warranty remains valid. Below is a great example of an Oris dive watch.
Second Hand Value
Longines and Oris are neck and neck when it comes to average resale value, and neither returns a higher average percentage of your original cost than the other when sold resale. But decades of experience in the watch business shows that second-hand Oris watches tend to sell faster than second-hand Longines watches.
Pricing
Both of these brands are considered valuable luxury watches. This means you can choose an entry-level model at around or below XXX.
Longines has a lower price point on an entry level watch and you can find it around 600-XXX. But it's important to compare apples to apples. The entry-level Longines watches I mentioned use low-cost quartz movements, while the cheapest Oris still uses a self-winding mechanical automatic movement. So in terms of price of Oris watches, there is added value there compared to the cheapest Longines watches.
