IWC VS Rolex | Detailed Comparison

We are often asked, "Is it better, IWC or Rolex?" Questions such as these are asked. This isn't the kind of question that can be answered directly without understanding the context of the question. This question has many contexts, so it could refer to any of the following questions:

(Click on any question below to jump to the answer)

“Which brand is more prestigious?” “Which brand has a better warranty?” “Which brand makes better watches?” “Which brand has a higher second-hand value?” “Which watch brand is more expensive?” “Which brand makes more durable watches?” “Which brand makes more precise watches?” “Which brand produces more complicated watches?”

Today we will look at Rolex and IWC and examine them through unique lenses that address each of these questions. Once these are answered you can draw your own conclusions and decide for yourself which one is best for you to purchase. You can then explore each brand more deeply at the series and then model level to narrow down your search to find your perfect new watch. Some of you are looking for simple three-hand watches with a date display; Some of you are looking for pieces with more than three hands and more complicated pieces than just the date. We will address these questions and try to guide you in finding your ideal new watch, no matter which brand you choose.

WARRANTY

Rolex last extended the warranty period to 5 years; This was, for a time, longer than that of any other watch manufacturer in the industry, except Omega watches, which recently came with a 5-year warranty on all new models. No matter how you look at it, Rolex has had by far the best warranty in the industry for a long time. What's more, Rolex also says its service interval is 10 years, which until very recently no other watch manufacturer came close to.

As of November 19, 2019, IWC announced that it will extend the warranty period from 2 years to 8 years when you register IWC's international limited warranty online under the MY IWC program. In addition, they consider this extended warranty period valid for every watch purchased in the last two years.

WORKMANSHIP

Both IWC and Rolex offer great craftsmanship with beautifully crafted mechanical movements; however, IWC tends to showcase its work by using transparent case backs. Rolex, on the other hand, only produces watches with closed case backs; Which is a bit sad because they make really excellentmechanical calibers

This also gives you a subtle clue as to which audience they are appealing to. Some even say that those who wear only a Rolex generally do not get into it 100% for the mechanical wonders of watchmaking and watchmaking, but rather for the social recognition of what they wear on their wrists. On the other hand, there are others who completely disagree with this and love the fact that Rolex makes very durable and precise watches. The same cannot be said for IWC, which is a fairly well-known brand but is also better known within the watchmaking and watch collecting community. Some might even describe it as a more refined watch brand.

It is also very important to note that Rolex produces all its new calibers in-house. IWC will often use ébauche calibers; These are a type of template made by a third party, then adjusted and developed in-house as they see fit.

IWC also produces new calibers in-house; but unless it specifically states that it is an in-house movement, you can mostly be sure that someone else made it, such as ETA (the famous Valjoux movement, for example) or Sellita. There is nothing wrong with using Ébauche calibers. Most watch manufacturers do this… but a certain prestige is attributed to watch manufacturers who can do everything in-house.

SECOND HAND VALUE

The clear winner here is Rolex. To date, no watch manufacturer has had an average resale value as high as Rolex. Even the “holy trinity” of watchmaking (Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin and Audemars Piguet) are not included. Watches are very similar to other mechanical products such as vehicles; Once you use them they lose a lot of their value.

PRICES

An entry-level Rolex watch will cost around 150% more than the cheapest IWC watch. The good thing is that you can buy an iconic IWC watch, like the IWC Pilot's Watch Mark

Brand Prestige and Recognition

Most watch enthusiasts, watch manufacturers, and serious collectors will tell you without hesitation that Rolex is a different kind of watch than IWC. It is more functional; a type of tool watch. The IWC, on the other hand, is a more refined watch that displays impeccable class and good taste. This allows Rolex to achieve 100% international brand recall, while IWC doesn't even come close. In fact, Rolex is the world's most valuable watch brand, according to Interbrand, a brand valuation organization that evaluates the most valuable and well-known Swiss brands — many of which are watch manufacturers. Rolex is the #1 most recognized luxury watch brand in the world. IWC is the 9th most well-known Swiss watch manufacturer in the world (which is quite impressive).

Some even say: if you want to impress the average person, wear a Rolex; but the IWC is a watch to be worn to impress a watchmaker or serious collector. This difference is seen not only in the brand positioning and marketing efforts of both brands, but also in the public's perception of each brand. Rolex promotes its brand aggressively and with many compelling advertisements that present it as a desirable and often attainable product to the common man. You can see this in the very publications where their ads appear. Their target audience is basically everyone and everywhere. Doing this creates a desire for something expensive in the public eye and gives the illusion of success to the person who manages to purchase one.

I know it may sound like I'm bashing Rolex, but I'm not. I'm just explaining what happens when a brand the size of Rolex aggressively advertises its products to everyone and everywhere. To be completely fair to Rolex, nothing I say changes the fact that Rolex has literally perfected its watches in a way that no other watch manufacturer in history has done. We will cover this in more detail in this article with comparisons of precision, workmanship, durability and warranty. It is only important to distinguish the difference between watchmaking craftsmanship and the marketing side of the industry.

DURABILITY

This is another area where Rolex shines. Especially in sports models such as Submariner, Deep-Sea, Sea-Dweller, Explorer, GMT Master II, Explorer II, Daytona, Milgauss. Many watch enthusiasts wear their Rolex as a “beater”; that is, as that daily clock that takes all the blows. Why? Because as they say in their commercials: “No one tests a Rolex the way Rolex tests it.”

They test their watches to extremes that literally no human could endure. The same cannot be said for IWC Schaffhausen watches. If I were to drop either watch (which would never happen voluntarily), my money is on the Rolex 10 out of 10 times.

There are many procedures in Rolex's quality control testing that subject the watch to an impact-like condition that would often destroy a mechanical caliber. However, the so-called “Crash Test” uses 20 different drop tests; Another, called “belier”, is literally a battering ram, delivering an effective impact blow equivalent to 5,000 Gs. This is hundreds of times the intensity of impacts used in testing motor vehicles. The watch must then remain undamaged and 100% functional, yet still have the highest precision. Do I dare to hit an IWC with a battering ram? Absolutely NO! I wouldn't do it even if you paid me. They are too valuable to even take such a risk. Rolex also performs many other tests, including waterproofing depth, and its other tests are just as brutal.

ACCURACY / PRECISION

Again, an area where Rolex takes the gold against IWC. Rolex began awarding all of its watches the Superlative Chronometer designation, which is approximately 250% more accurate than the COSC Chronometer designation, the highest third-party designation given to the most accurate watches. While a COSC certified Chronometer must have a deviation tolerance of no more than -4/+6 seconds per day, a Superlative Chronometer first receives a COSC certification, then the movement is cased and retested until it reaches an accuracy rating of -2/+2 seconds per day.

COMPLICATIONS

Finally, one thing where IWC has surpassed Rolex! IWC Schaffhausen produces many watches with additional features beyond simply showing the time, and “high complications”, the horological term given to combinations of additional features. Watches like the solid platinum IWC Grande Complications, which combine a Chronograph, Perpetual Calendar, Minute Repeater and Moon Phase, are a great example of a high-complication watch and come with a price tag of XXX.

Simply put: IWC has the opportunity to flex its watchmaking muscles in this area and show what it can really do (mechanically), and this is one of the main reasons why serious “watch people” often love them more than Rolex.
