Cartier VS TAG Heuer

Is TAG Heuer better than Cartier?

We are asked this question often and can be interpreted in many different ways. Click on any question to go to the answer section for that question.

Which one is more famous? Which one is more durable? Which one is more accurate? Which one is more affordable? Which one has better second-hand value? Which one is more prestigious? Which one has better water resistance?

Having said that, let's take each of these questions one by one so that you can see more clearly which is the best option for you and your own needs when comparing Cartier VS TAG Heuer watches.

Brand Prestige

According to Interbrand, TAG Heuer is one of the top 50 Swiss brands determined by this organization, an agency that evaluates the world's best Swiss brands.

Cartier, however, is not included in this Top 50 Swiss brands list; because by definition Cartier is a French brand and a world-class master jeweler that also produces Swiss-made watches. Forbes recently listed Cartier as one of theworld's best brands; On the other hand, TAG Heuer is simply one of Switzerland's best brands.

Accuracy and Precision

Some of the most accurate mechanical watches in the world are known as Chronometers. Chronometer is one of the highest-level titles given to a watch known for its incredible accuracy; This title is given to the watch's movement by an independent laboratory called COSC, which performs rigorous tests to guarantee precision. Cartier watches do not have this designation, but you can see a few TAG Heuer watches with this title. These are usually models with tourbillon complications, such as the recently introduced TAG Heuer Carrera Caliber Heuer 02T Tourbillon. This means that this mechanical watch is accurate within an acceptable deviation range of -4/+6 seconds per day.

Pricing

While we're talking about price here, we'll start with an entry-level watch from each brand.

The cheapest TAG Heuer watch costs much less than the most affordable Cartier watch. This has a lot to do with the prestige of the brand, but it also has a lot to do with the types of watches these two brands offer. While TAG Heuer has many very affordable sporty watches that generally use more affordable materials, Cartier produces more elegant, stylish watches and jewelry watches and is a higher-end brand.

So you can get an entry-level TAG watch at a more affordable price than a Cartier.

Durability

Both brands have excellent workmanship, but the difference between the two is that TAG Heuer's sporty watches have a higher ratio, and these watches are generally made more solidly than classic watches. We're not saying that any watch is designed to take a beating, but sporty models have a more robust design and are therefore more resistant to impacts.

IMPORTANT NOTE: A watch consists of many small parts and it is best not to knock itever.

Cartier watches, on the other hand, are more elegant, classic watches and do not usually offer robust designs and the extra durability that comes with this.

Second Hand Value

Just like the sales price, the average resale value of a Cartier will often exceed that of a TAG Heuer. Of course, it is not possible to generalize this answer to every model. There will always be certain models within both brands that will give you back a higher percentage of the money you originally paid if you decide to sell. But on average a Cartier has a higher resale value and retains its value better than a TAG Heuer

IMPORTANT NOTE: There are many factors and variables that go into calculating the value of a second-hand watch.

To give an example: The status of the watch; whether it still uses all its original parts; whether it is still under warranty; whether it comes with its original box; whether it comes with its original documentation (especially warranty papers and any evidence that it has been serviced by the manufacturer, etc.). There are other factors as well; For example, if the watch is an iconic watch, or a very rare model, such as a limited or numbered series, or even a model with an even rarer defect that occurred accidentally during production. I'm sure you know what I mean by now.

Waterproof

Cartier Diving Watches

Cartier has a range of diving watches and you can find them in the 'Caliber de Cartier' collection. These Caliber de Cartier Diver watches are powered by an automatic in-house movement called the Cartier Caliber 1904 MC. It is available in a variety of colors and different straps, from stainless steel to ADLC to 18k rose gold. You can also find them on rubber straps, stainless steel bracelets or steel & rose gold two-tone bracelets. This collection offers 300m/1000ft water resistance. Check out our waterproofing page to understand what a watch's waterproof rating really means.

TAG Heuer Diving Watches

Let's talk about TAG Heuer diving watches, aka the TAG Aquaracer collection. The watches in this collection are very affordable compared to Cartier, but it is very important to note that most of them use battery-powered quartz movements; however, some use mechanical movements, such as TAG Heuer's Caliber 16, and typically offer 300m/1000ft water resistance.

However, within this collection, there is a sub-series that offers better water resistance than the Cartier Diver watches. It's waterproof to 500m/1650ft and has a Helium release valve for serious divers. Similar to the Cartier, it uses a self-winding, fully mechanical movement.

An important distinction: The TAG Heuer Caliber 5 movement that powers these TAG Heuer watches are not in-house movements, like the movements in the Cartier Diver watches. Rather, it is based on an ébauche (third party) mechanism called the ETA 2824-2. Let's point out that ETA produces excellent movements, but watch collectors like to boast that everything is made by them; this increases its prestige.
